Barrow

After an at times harrowing plane ride we arrived to a rainy cold Barrow some time after 11am only to discover we have no cell service (Cellular One is the only service up here.) It's a tiny town right on the Arctic Ocean. We went on a quick tour of the town, then just got through watching a welcome ceremony by local Eskimos at the cultural center. This involved music and dance and culminated in a blanket throw where we all gathered round a blanket made of seal skin and pulled it taught with a child on top, hurdling the kid into the air to the ceiling. I recorded some audio of it -- I may be able to send it to the blog, I'll give that a shot tomorrow.

It looks like the sun is out again. We're planning on seeing the "midnight sun" tonight, which actually is in view between 1am-1:20am. We're heading back to Fairbanks tomorrow afternoon. Not sure what we're going to do with all this time, maybe go on an excursion in the morning. We'll see. More pictures tomorrow night when we're back in a cell service zone.
